Anime References at the Olympics
From Pokémon to Dragon Ball Z, Japan is known worldwide for its production of anime. The 2020 Olympic Games were held in Tokyo, Japan. So, it comes as no surprise to anyone that these Games had more anime references than one could count.
The theme song to Haikyu!!, a popular anime about a Japanese men's volleyball team, could be heard during intense volleyball competitions. At the closing ceremony the song Gurenge from Demon Slayer was preformed. From transitions to commercials, the Japanese Olympic committee and brand sponsors highlighted the unique Japanese animation style that combines snippets of global pop culture with Japanese history and culture.
Even the athletes got in on the fun. Here are some of the most memorable anime references from the athletes at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
